This year, our K-8 students will be taking part in the “Start With Hello” program at school. The “Start With Hello” program is sponsored by the Sandy Hook Promise (SHP); a national, nonprofit organization based in Newtown, Connecticut. “Start With Hello” helps us teach students the skills they need to reach out and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation and create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their classroom and school. Social isolation is the overwhelming feeling of being left out, lonely, or treated like you are invisible. Excessive feelings of isolation can be associated with violent behavior. Furthermore, young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence, and/or depression.

We have several grade appropriate activities planned throughout the Start With Hello Week (Sept 20-24). Homeroom teachers will lead students through activities that have them thinking about our community, and their place in it. They will create pledges of kindness, create posters and artwork for the hallways and take part in a spirit week to raise awareness to our efforts of combatting isolation in our school.
