Constellation Schools' Lorain Community Elementary and Middle School recognized new achievements March 21 from the schools' volleyball and basketball team.

A pep rally took place at the school, 1110 W. Fourth St. in Lorain, to celebrate the basketball and volleyball teams winning championships against other Constellation schools teams.

Kammera Rice, assistant principal, said this is the first time either co-ed team has won a championship.

Additionally, the school's volleyball team is No. 1 in the league, Rice said.

The Constellation Schools Lorain community wanted to honor its student athletes with the help of cheerleaders and pep band, which is the only pep band in all Constellation Schools, she said.

Lorain Mayor Chase Ritenauer also attended the pep rally to congratulate the students for their hard work.

"It's great as a mayor to come out for events like this," Ritenauer said. "This is a fun thing to see champions of our school, which is very exciting."

He encouraged the athletes not to forget the teamwork that got them to where they are.

"The bottom line is, teamwork and working together is something you're going to have to do for the rest of your lives," Ritenauer said. "Teamwork is so critical."

Talent only can take you so far because you have to be willing to be there for your team and work together, he said.

"Take today and apply it to every aspect in life," the mayor said.

Rice said the players worked extremely hard to get where they are; especially the basketball team battling from third, to fifth and second place in previous years.

Xavier Alvarez, an eighth-grader and basketball player, said during the pep rally, their success wouldn't have been possible without teamwork.

Xavier said everyday when the team plays, they have the responsibility to represent their school well.

"(The team's dedication) gives us the chance to showcase what kind of team we have representing Lorain and (Lorain Constellation Schools)," he said.

The athletes have steadily made progress with the help of their coaches, Rice said.

"(The progress) has helped with the relationships they share with one another," she said. "This is also the first year (our school) has swept both, so, it's kind of a special year for us."
